Chris Makin - Q&A

Living now: Bramhall, Cheshire
Born: 1973
Occupation now: Property Manager

As a youngster, who was the biggest influence on your career?
My dad, he trained me and took me everywhere & anywhere!

How did you come to join Sunderland?
I was at Marseilles when Reidy made a £500,000 bid. Marseilles accepted and I swapped the Mediterranean for the North Sea!

How do you remember your Sunderland debut?
Lost at Sheffield United (2-0) I think. Boiling hot, as usual, and we flattered to deceive.

What was your most memorable match as a Sunderland player?
Chelsea at home, first season back in the Premiership. 4-0 at half-time, the game was over!

And the worst?
Same season, Chelsea away. It should have been 10-0 but we came away with a creditable 4-0.

Which do you consider your best goal for Sunderland?
My one and only! Spurs away, last game of the season.

Who was the best player you player alongside at Sunderland?
Probably my partnership with Buzzer, Nicky Summerbee.

Who was the best you played against?
No one player stood out. But against Arsenal, United & Chelsea, just for their movement.

What’s the greatest moment of your playing career?
No specific moments. Beating any of the top sides or winning any big game.

Who do you rate as the best manager you player under?
We had a great side at Sunderland under Reidy. I must mention Joe Royle for bringing me up at Oldham, but Steve Coppell was fantastic, also.

What was the funniest incident you recall during a game?
Playing Man United at home when the stripper ran on and asked me for a kiss!

What was the best part of being a professional footballer?
Keeping fit for a living. Winning away from home was always a buzz. When you win it's the greatest feeling in the world!

And the worst?
Any defeat and the following week was a right-off.

Looking back at your playing career, any regrets?
Too many to mention, though still very proud.

What did you do as your playing career ended?
Just retired now!

What are doing these days?
Started getting into property management.

What’s the most important thing in your life at present?
Definitely family, & trying to get them settled.
