Sunderland Former Players Texas Scramble 2013 at the Sharpley Golf Course

Sunderland Former Players Association’s Winston Young reports on the 2013 Texas Scramble was played at Sharpley Golf Course on Friday 11th October.

'The course was in great condition although the weather was cold and breezy. The event was sponsored by Town Centre Garage, Heineken and Makro.

17 teams took part and the Porterfield Trophy (best overall team score) was won by Town Centre Citroen led by Phil Smith and included ‘73 hero Ritchie Pitt. The team trophy was won by Jeff Wilson’s fourball who also included another ’73 star, Ron Guthrie. Due to the weather conditions no one managed to win the star prize of a Citreon C1 car for a ‘hole in one’ at the par 3 eleventh.

The event raised funds for the Former Players’ Association ensured a guaranteed £500 donation was made towards a trek to Mount Kilimanjaro being undertaken by Ritchie Pitt in support of Steve Cram’s charity – COCO.

Everyone who took part was full of praise for the effort made by the staff at the Sharpley course to ensure the event ran smoothly.’
